We spoil you with all the information you need in order to have some exciting days on Gili Trawangan, Meno and Air. Get ready for some insider tips!
Greet the fish and meet some turtles – Go snorkeling and scuba diving on the Gili Islands
Gili Islands offer beautiful nature and many fun activities ashore, but there is a whole new world underwater. Explore colourful fish, various types of coral and if you are lucky, you will even spot some turtles! Indonesia is part of the ‘Coral Triangle’ and well known for its superb diving and pristine coral reefs. Get ready for your trip to the islands Gili Trawangan, Meno and Air. The islands are predestined for snorkeling and scuba diving as the water is calm and the current isn’t strong. What are you waiting for? Grab finns, mask, snorkel or compressed air bottle and let the fun begin! You can rent your equipment or book an exciting trip at many small shops at the beach. You will find a lot of those, just keep your eyes open! Especially the price for snorkeling equipment is very cheap. You won’t ever pay more than 4 Dollars.
In general, you will be able to explore the beauty of the ocean all around the three islands. But there are some areas that are more suitable.
Snorkeling on Gili Trawangan: We recommend you to go to the north corner of the island.
Snorkeling on Gili Meno: you will have the best experience in the northeast of the island.
On Gili Air: it is best to go snorkeling in the east, where you can stay at Joupy Bungalows (LINK) which is directly located at the beach.
Spots that are great to be explored with snorkel, fins and mask are also great for scuba diving, of course!
Get active on the Gili Islands – Rent a bike and go around the islands in just 1 hour
No, it’s not just a rumour! There is really no motorized traffic on all of the three Gili Islands. You will only see some E-scooters here and there and a lot of horse driven carts. Since those horses aren’t treated well and have to travel many kilometers a day in the burning sun with few breaks and too less water, we recommend you to boycott this animal cruelty. Anyways, it is so much more fun to explore Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air in an active manner. No worries, you will be surrounded with many like-minded people that go by bike. The bicycle is the most common means of transportation on the Gilis. Therefore, you can find rentals on almost every corner. Usually, your accommodation will rent out some bicycles, too. Just ask your local hosts, they will be happy to help you out.
Take a priceless picture – Sit on a swing in the ocean and go with the flow of the waves
You love to awake your inner child? Perfect! You won’t ever sit on as many swings as you will do on Gili Trawangan and Gili Air. If you take a walk at the white sand beaches, you will quickly notice that almost every beachfront café or restaurant has its own swing in the ocean. Good for you! Get yourself a cold coconut, have a seat and enjoy the calming flow of the waves. Or simply go for a swim and relax on one of these. The swings are also great for lying in the water and enjoying some moments of ease. And they are even better for taking priceless pictures with your beloved ones. Strike a pose and smile. Life in Indonesia is great!
When the sky is turning rose and orange – Watch the sunset at the beach
When the sun is going down and the sky is turning rose and orange, the world seems to be a better place. You just can’t be disappointed by a sunset! What about a long walk at the beach until it is too dark to see anything? There is no better end to the day than spending it at the beach and watching the sun setting. Or relax in one of the cafes and restaurants directly at the beach. Many of them even place their bean bags, sunbeds and tables towards the sunset. You simply have to stay on the right side of the island to catch the last rays of the sun. The best spot on Gili Trawangan is at the southwestern beach, where you can also find Trawangan Hill. Watch the sunset from above and enjoy a breath-taking view! Book a room at Trawangan Cottages (LINK), which is only 300 meters far from the harbor, and stay in the south of the island. On Gili Meno it is best to stay in the west. And if you are on Gili Air, you want to visit the northeast part of the island in order to see the sky turning colorful.
